Mini Review: Good Knight Story.

Knight Story is a puzzle RPG game for mobile. It is similar to Puzzle and Dragons in away except you are a knight trying to rescue the princess. As of right now there is 125 different levels to complete. As of this review I am on 113. Knight Story has am average story but the humor is what this game makes up in. Some of the lines from the Knight and monsters are generally pretty fun while some are "roll your eyes" funny. A lot of the bosses are unique and also have their own dialogue. Knight Story involves you matching up different colored orbs to perform that elements attack. There is also an element guide on the top of the battle screen to tell you which element is strong against each other.

During your puzzle adventure you meet a lot of decent characters, find weapons and new spells to help you on your way. If you play often enough without waiting to collect your daily gold reward you will get overpowered very quickly. There is the option of buying in game currency but it shouldn't be dependent on it so much. A lot of the battles I was finding myself losing very often until I waited the set amount of hours, several times and gathered enough gold to upgrade my weapons so I would have a chance.

The levels in Knight Story are not all the same though. Some have you collecting items while trying to stay alive against a large enemy or the normal slaying your enemies to progress. It doesn't look like they will be adding any more levels, it's been several months with no updates which is kind of disappointing. Overall Knight Story is a good, quick pass time and recommend if you're into puzzle RPG's.

Mini Review: Color Switch

Color Switch is an addictive puzzle game on iOS and Android where the point of the game is to bounce a colored ball through obstacles. Sound easy? Think again! There are a couple of ways you can play this. Either play endless mode or the many different modes offered. Endless mode is essentially a mode that never ends, gets faster and you try to beat your score....almost like Flappy Bird. With Color Switch as you progress through each obstacle the color of your ball changes and you need to match it up with the color of the obstacle in order to proceed. These obstacles can be moving, be very small or even change appearance.

At the time of this review there are currently 19 different game modes. Each one being very different from the others. Fortafy Games adds a new mode almost every bg update for free. One of my personal favorites is Climb where your ball or icon rides up each side of the wall in order to reach the goal. It start off easy but as you progress it gets much faster and almost frame perfect when you switch between the walls. A lot of these modes will having you wanting to throw your phone at the wall but when you beat it, it feels so rewarding.

The music is super catchy and each mode has it's own soundtrack. You collect stars from playing the game overall and are able to use these stars to buy new balls. One might be a pokeball, thumbs up, a skull, etc..... Color Switch is constantly getting updated with new modes, balls, and much more. Highly recommended.

*Update* New mode Slide was added after the review. Also note that this is a free game.

Great!

Undertale

Undertale is an RPG available exclusively for PC and Mac, but don’t let that dissuade you. It is by and large one of the most unique games currently available for many different reasons. Gameplay varies tremendously with the situation, but most of the “exploration” takes place in a traditional top down view with four directional movement (diagonals are also included). It’s an entirely different experience than the huge AAA titles (looking at you, Fallout 4), and I love it for that.

One of the nicer aspects about a game such as Undertale is its more traditional offline nature. You get to have a solitary experience (the strong-willed can complete a run in a day) and take in the world with no distractions. It’s just you and the game, and that’s refreshing. Without the requirement of an internet connection, you don’t even need to hide yourself from trolls or hackers.

Visually speaking, Undertale is designed as a cross between retro 8-bit and 16-bit type graphics reminiscent of the Earthbound franchise. Despite that, the pixel models are selectively very detailed and characters all have unique movements and animations to correspond with their moods and feelings. In terms of creating an immersive environment, Undertale does exceedingly well.

Battles are handled on a turn-based system, but don’t let that throw you off. Enemy turns involve dodging a slew of varying attacks in a danmaku bullet hell style of gameplay, minus the need to destroy enemy ships (as seen in games such as Gradius). The biggest difference is on the offensive turn, as there’s more than just attacking or healing. You also have various dialogues and the most central element of the game.

Mercy

Every fight has two options: kill or mercy. Monsters will eventually die if attacked until they run out of HP, but you can also “spare” them by using dialogue options. For instance, early in the game a reindeer with tree antlers appears as a random encounter. Upon use of the “check” command, you see its trees have been decorated and it doesn’t like that.

If you spend turns removing those decorations instead of attacking, you can spare the monster without dealing any damage. Given the nature of most games, you might wonder exactly why you would even bother. After all, monsters you don’t “kill” yield no experience points.

Yet the game has a few different ways to play. On a pacifist run, you can play to the very end without ever killing a single monster. That includes bosses! If you play your dialogues right, you can even befriend them. Naturally, this also comes with some additional challenges.

No killing means no exp, which means you never level up. Not that you’d need to deal extra damage, but that also means you don’t get any additional HP. Playing the game better becomes more important than leveling up, so the game forces you to become better. Unless, of course, you get fed up and decide to start killing everything in sight.

Murder

The other way to play through Undertale is often referred to as a “genocide” run. As the name implies, you kill everything you come across. This yields the most exp and lets you level up, giving you more HP to handle enemy attacks. While the genocide run is generally considered easier, it has some interesting effects.

Certain fights change when you alter the course of the story by killing everyone. Some enemies become more difficult or more aggressive (as one might imagine). Other fights will take longer (strangely enough) to win if you’re just using attack.

Other than regular battles, there are some other systems in Undertale worthy of note.

In the Field

Outside of battle, there are a number of different puzzles and traps you’ll need to navigate to reach your destination. While most puzzles aren’t incredibly challenging, they do require some thought. A few are timed and will demand some additional dexterity.

That means tons of mini-games, so you won’t always be able to rely exclusively on the skills you’re using to battle through the rest of the game. Decision making is important because what choices you make will have different outcomes. This can even include what equipment you’re wearing.

Inventory in the game is extraordinarily limited, as you can only carry up to 8 items at a time. You’ll need to choose what you bring with you carefully. Though random battles are somewhat infrequent, you can quickly find yourself in a bad spot if you have no healing items because your inventory is filled with dogs (you’ll understand if you play).

Plot

It might seem curious to list the plot so late in an RPG review, but that’s only to save the best for last. Undertale’s plot is simple in nature but filled with clever jokes and heavy themes. Within the first few minutes of the game you’ll find yourself cast as a child that’s fallen into a cave. This is a place where, in an ancient war, humans banished the monsters to and sealed them away with a barrier. This is a land where monsters rule.

While your goal is mostly to escape the underground and return home, the variety of unique and entertaining characters can quickly make you forget about reaching the end. Recall that your enemies can quickly become your friends, but only if you handle the battles and dialogue right. You’ll quickly learn that the protagonist’s life is incredibly important, even as a child.

Where to Get It?

Undertale is available on Steam and GOG for an affordable $9.99. Due to the different choices you can make in the game, you can get at least several runs out of it. Considering how most modern games run as high as $60 (before the DLC), a ten spot seems like a good deal.
Do you have any additional questions about Undertale? If you’ve played it, what did you think of it? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Mini Review: Kerbal Space Program (Xbox One)

Bob, Bill and Jebediah Kerman crash onto console

Release Date: 15th July, 2016
Genres: Space-flight-simulation, Single-Player
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Windows, OS X Linux
Platform Reviewed on: Xbox One
Date Reviewed: 25th July, 2016

After over two years in development within Steam Early Access, the hit space-simulation lands on consoles with an experience recommended for Xbox one players everywhere; it's a rare hidden gem hidden amongst the depths of modern shooters.

Kerbal Space Program is home to 3 different modes: Career, Science and Sandbox. Sandbox is where your imagination becomes the limit as you have an infinite supply of any equipment in the game, which can lead to hilarious results. Career is when you have complete control of your space program, from keeping track of the cost to run the facility, to upgrading the buildings in it. Science was clearly constructed with Career in mind, because of their similarities, but they feel different and distinct enough gameplay-wise to be separate ways of playing.

When playing the game, it is entirely possible to spend hours upon hours at a time attempting to brainstorm ideas and put them into action. It is entirely possible for you to spend hours upon hours building or modifying ridiculously stupid ships or planes in an attempt to break free from orbit. And it is, unfortunately, possible for you to spend hours upon hours at a time failing horribly and concluding your gaming session with the deaths of multiple kerbals, which is how I spent my Sunday night. This means the game is better played in long segments rather than multiple small doses, which may sound off-putting at first but you can save different designs and test them later,
However, the clunky and somewhat complex controls as well as frequent frame rate drops prevent this game from being the best it could be, but if you're looking for something new and exciting, give this a try.

Good!

Indie Review: Castellum (Alpha)

Castellum is currently in it's alpha stages and I hope to be along during the Beta and full release of Castellum. I was one of the lucky ones to get invited into trying the alpha version and was asked to do a mini review. Remember this is an alpha which means it is subject to change at any time.

Castellum is an arena based RPG where you pick your type of warrior and enter them into battle. Each battle is automated almost like Punch Club. After each fight you earn resources to use to improve your fighter with better equipment and new skills. During the alpha test a lot of the game was limited to what I was able to do. For the most part I was able to experience the core of the game. After a few attempts at playing Castellum I got a good feel at what the game was trying to accomplish. The gameplay offered is a smart decision because it keeps the player entertained for hours depending how much content gets added into the full game. After awhile the battles can get a little stale as you watch the same animation over and over with the odd time use of a skill.

Some other features that Castellum has is an Arena where you can fight against other opponents including your friends or the best of the best. Each fight will cost you a ticket. Other players are able to challenge you while you're away as well. There is also a mini game building. This feature is not implemented in the Alpha version. There is a bar where you can join clans and gain followers. Not available in the Alpha version as well. There is a shop where you can buy various armors, weapons, runes, and potions to help out on the battlefield! Lastly there is your character screen where you can change your equipment, improve your traits, earn new skills, and check your stats and inventory.

In conclusion I recommend keeping an eye opened for this lovely game when it becomes available. Lots of options, customization and really interesting art style. The audio is something I noticed right away as well. It is so cheery and suits this type of game immensely. You can tell the developer has put a lot of time and thought into this game. Really the only other criticism I can give is to make the battling animations a bit more entertaining or provide the player with something to do as you are fighting in combat. I also hope to see hundreds of different armors and weapons to give the player more customization options.

Great Start!

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows

Platform: Nintendo Wii U
Platform Reviewed: Nintendo Wii U
Genre: Creative Platformer
Release Date: September 11, 2015
Date Reviewed: September 18, 2015

Plague of Shadows is free DLC content for the game Shovel Knight where you get to play as the character Plague Knight. This free DLC pack comes with the ability to do a challenge mode where you can complete many different challenges for each knight. This will be unlockable when you beat the game once with Shovel Knight and Plague Knight. That isn't everything that came with this great DLC content. If you've beaten the normal game with Shovel Knight you will unlock the ability to play as Plague Knight. The levels and map layout are all still the same but it is very much a different game. You step in the shoes of Plague Knight where you have abilities such as throwing bombs. Just like with Shovel Knight, Plague Knight can also gather special items and customize his attacks. Each bomb has a certain fuse and certain explosive style that you can choose from which is needed to overcome certain obstacles.

Each boss, each level are played differently with Plague Knight.

Plague Knight in a nutshell is very different from Shovel Knight. You can gather potions in order to increase your health, you need to gather coins in order to upgrade the shop and buy new attack items and Plague Knight has to move throw each level very different heavily relying on his exploding jumps. Plague Knight has no shovel to bounce off certain obstacles. Instead if you hold down the jump button and let go he will launch himself straight up or side ways. Plague Knight also has a double jump but doesn't jump as high as Shovel Knight does. Plague Knight even has his own armor sets as well which each have their own unique effects.

The level design is of coarse flawless as ever. There is a bunch of new music scrolls you are able to collect and unlock. Playing as Plague Knight feels completely different and more of a challenge than Shovel Knight. Plague Knight is also as long if not longer than the original game and it is FREE. Plague Knight's story is very unique from Shovel Knight's but both have to do with love overall. Overall Plague Knight is a fantastic addon and is something that most developers need to do with their games. I look forward to the next piece of DLC they release.

Fantastic DLC!

Chariot

Platform: Nintendo Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PC
Platform Reviewed for: Nintendo Wii U
Genre: Puzzle Plat-former
Release Date: January 8th, 2015 (Wii U), September 30th, 2014 (XB1, PS4, PC)
Date Reviewed: January 8th, 2015

Chariot is a puzzle plat-former where the goal is to pull, push and guide a Chariot around each level collection treasure and special items. Each level get increasingly harder and longer with challenges on each level as you complete them. After your first run though a level you unlock additional modes and areas for that same level. After the completion of a level you also acquire gold from all of the treasure you have collected overall. You use this gold to purchase upgrades and new items to make your adventure a little easier but to also over come new obstacles in the later levels. Chariot is a well lengthened game that you can spend hours upon hours on unlocking everything and even just going through each level. Each level is a minimum of 15 minutes or longer if you aren't rushing through it. Collect as much treasure as possible because you will need the gold.

"Papercuts Scare me to Death!"

Chariot is a very pleasing game with lots of humour, and adventures. The big selling point of this game is the cooperative play. Chariot makes it so that if you play with a friend you can overcome even more challenges and get more rewards for your efforts. Chariot is designed for cooperative play. You are obviously able to play solo but it is much more enjoyable with a friend. With cooperative play there are challenges that you and a friend are able to do. If you do these challenges you are able to get diamonds which gives you a lot of gold. It is well worth the frustration sometimes.

Co-op is great in Chariot!

Chariot is a very beautiful game visually with tons of colors, unique art work, beautiful environments and even other NPC's. Each level has it's own unique look and feel to it. The character models and animations are extremely well done and really captures each of the characters personality. Chariot's soundtrack is top notch as well. Again, each zone has their own unique music and sounds which really sets the mood for each zone.

In Conclusion Chariot is a must own indie developed game. What I love most about the Wii U version of the game is obviously the tablet feature where you are able to have one person play on the TV and the other play on the tablet anywhere in the house. The one thing I do wish they would have done is add more features with the tablet for in game. Maybe even something small such as interacting with the environment with your finger. If you are looking for a good sit down cooperative game Chariot is perfect for that.

Solar Roller

Platform: iOS, Android
Genre: 3D Platformer
Date Reviewed: November 10, 2014

Solar Roller is the newest mobile game for Android and iOS developed by Runway Games. Solar Roller provides unique and fun game play where you use your phones motion controls to navigate through each of the levels. You start off with using Pluto and work your way up to all of the planets. Depending on how faster you complete each level you will earn stars to show how well you did. Each planet has their own unique level designs and they get more challenging each time. You basically control a ball which looks to me like a moon. You navigate each level to the goal using the tilt controls with an option to jump when you swipe upwards. This becomes very important as the much harder levels require you to jump on to platforms. This is the type of game where you come so close to beating a level and mess up you end up throwing your phone at the wall but when you succeed you feel like you've achieved something. This is where Solar Roller shines. It makes you want to continue and beat that one level you’re stuck on and once you do you feel like a god. This kind of game play is what makes Solar Roller a real treat and makes you keep coming back for more. With an already huge amount of levels to complete you are in for a treat. Another small feature I love is that this game is free and they do it in a way where you are not bombarded with ads that interfere with the game play. If you run out of lives you have an option to let it recharge or watch a short ad and get all of your lives refilled.

 This....level...is....NUTS!

The game play, music and level design make it feel like you are in space while playing these levels. Although the music and background can get repetitive it’s still not a big issue or game breaker at all. You are so focused on getting your ball into the goal that you don’t even notice half the time. One feature I truly enjoy is the option to record your game play. You can record and share your videos with your friends or people on the internet. Not usually a feature you see in iOS games. Very nice. There are a couple of features I do hope to see in a future update. Keep in mind they have already updated the game once so I am certain we will see even more. Some nice features I would like to see are leader boards, an adjust camera option, a race mode, and new levels added once in a while. Also it may get frustrating for some players on the difficulty curve. I love what Runway Games has done with the game so far and with updates I can see Solar Roller getting very popular. This is only their second game and I am already impressed and have high hopes for the team.

Red Sea Exodus

Platform: IOS, Android.
Genre: Point and Shoot
Release Date: September 2nd, 2014
Date Reviewed: September 9th, 2014

First off I would like to thank Runway Games for letting me beta test and review their first game! Looking forward to more from you guys!

Red Sea Exodus is a game on the IOS store and Android store. As of writing this review it is currently only on Android devices. It will be on the IOS store very shortly. Red Sea Exodus is a simple point and shoot game. You help people cross the red sea. While you are helping them cross there are soldiers trying to stop them. The main goal of the game is to escort them to safety by using the water and other elements to stop the enemies. Your basic attack is the water around you and your enemies. The longer you hold your finger on the water the bigger and stronger the attack becomes. If it gets to hectic then you can always use the elements to help you. You may choose from powers such as a firewall, lightning, earth, and others. These powers have to be bought though with in game currency. While defeating some enemies they may drop coins which can be used to purchase more powers. They also offer a way to purchase more coins at very reasonable prices. Better yet, some of the profits go to charities! So by helping the developer you're also helping charities such as Brothers Brother Foundation, The Ronald McDonald House (of Pittsburgh), and K.I.D.S (Kids in Distressed Situations). Also, once per day you earn a free bonus token which you can spin to get a free power up. Bonus spins can also be purchased in game.

 Charities your purchases go to.

Bonus Rolls can win you Powers!

Pesky enemies!

Red Sea Exodus overall is very well put together considering it is Runway Games first game. It's a challenging game and a great game to compete against your friends and people around the world. The Leader board function is fantastic for that. I hope in a future update they will add a feature where you can challenge different people on the leader boards. The animations are very smooth and look really good. Very colorful. The music, although repetitive is very soothing and catchy, really suits the game. The game has Facebook connectivity to see your friends scores. I also like the look of the enemies.

Leaderboards! (I'm #8)

Overall Red Sea Exodus is a great game, especially for the challenge and competitions. It does need a little work regarding a few bugs that aren't that noticeable, needs for variety in each level, and a challenge option would be great! They are however are adding updates to the game which is fantastic. I cannot wait to see how this game will evolve over time and I look forward to future games from Runway Games. Pick it up, it is a free game and please help support the developer it all goes to a good cause. Fantastic work on your first game!

Shovel Knight

Console: 3DS, Wii U, PC
Genre: Platformer
Release Date: June 26, 2014
Date Reviewed: July 4, 2014

Gameplay:
Shovel Knight takes another whack at the classic plat forming genre. The style for Shovel Knight takes place in the NES era. With classic 8 bit graphics and 8 bit sounds/music. It has a mixture between Megaman, Castlevania, and Mario. It mixes these three great games together to make its own step into the classic plat forming series. The game plays just like you would expect it if you've ever played an NES plat forming game before. Feels exactly like the three games I mention above. Shovel Knight feels like a fresh entry overall. The basic principle of the game is going through different levels; beat each knight to advance forward and save the Shield Knight from the evil Enchantress. You are a knight that wields a shovel as his weapon of choice. You attack with your shovel and perform certain tasks to venture through each level with this mighty shovel. From downward thrusts so you can bounce on objects and enemies to swooping your shovel to deal with enemies, the shovel has many uses.  Each boss knight has its own special attack and abilities. Just like in Megaman you need to find out what their patterns are to defeat them. Some of these bosses are not the easiest.

Ahhhh Classic.

In Shovel Knight you can even upgrade your shovel to perform new attacks. Shovel Knight can also purchase new armor that has different effects to the player. Just like in Mario you are on an over world map and you are able to choose any level, any time. Sometime on the world map there are random events as in mini boss battles, and treasure to grab by using certain items. If you are the type of person that needs to collect everything than you can even collect music notes. Return these music notes to the bard in town and he will buy them off of you for 500 gold a piece. When you give the bard these music notes he will add them to your collection so you can go back and speak with him at any time and listen to the music you have unlocked. Shovel Knight provides an excellent difficulty level as well just like in the classic plat formers. It starts off moderately easy and then picks right up and ups the difficulty level. Some levels make you want to pull your hair out but in the end are very rewarding when you finally beat it.

Graphics/Visuals:
Shovel Knight is an 8 bit plat forming adventure. It takes place during the NES generation of plat form gaming. The visuals and style of artwork is outstanding. Very colourful game, great looking backgrounds, fantastic looking enemies, great animations and NPC’s. All in all it is a very nice looking 8 bit game and a fantastic edition to the NES plat forming series.

Epic Boss Battles!

Soundtrack/Music:
Wow. Shovel Knight has one of the most amazing soundtracks I have even heard in the 8 bit era. Each and every song is unique, different, and makes your ears sing. You can tell they put their heart and soul into this game, into the music. The music is so good that it’s making me unlock and find all of the music notes hidden in the game. I often find myself going back to the main town just to listen to the music I have unlocked. Each boss, each level, and zone has its own unique soundtrack and every single one of them is a breath of fresh air. You can even get the entire soundtrack on download; it is very well worth it. Some people even got this game just because of the amazing soundtrack.

Epic Soundtrack!

Final Thoughts:
Shovel Knight is a breath of fresh air to the 8 bit plat forming series. It feels very familiar yet very new. With a mixture of the greatest plat forming NES games with a hint of its own style, Shovel Knight is a fantastic addition. Beautiful music, addicting and challenging game play, and beautiful art work, Shovel Knight is a must purchase. In fact I purchased it for all three platforms! My recommendation is to buy it on the 3DS or the Wii U just because you can quickly switch between all of them items with just a tap of your finger. The PC version provided no quick select tool.

Mini Review: Brutal Doom

Brutal Doom is a MOD the someone created for Doom 1 and 2 for the PC. This MOD adds a ton of new features to the games. Such as unique gun animations, updates textures to enemies, fire, and special effects. The game is unchanged from the original story but adds a more modern feel to Doom. You can zoom in with each gun as in scoping in, and each gun as a reload animation. The guns are updated as well. Each gone as a new texture to it and the pistol is now an assault rifle. Each gun has it's own unique animation and they all look incredible. Every monster in this MOD also has new some new animations to it. The gore is much more intense, hence the name. When you shoot and kill an enemy blood sprays everywhere and sticks to the walls and ceilings. The blood also drips off of the ceilings. The explosions looks really good as well and the glow from the barrels are great.

Brutal!

Brutal Doom also adds a ton of new options and difficulty settings. There are 7 different difficulty settings each have a challenge of their own. There are also other options as well to make it feel like a more modern FPS game. You can make it so you can look around and control the view with your mouse like in modern FPS game which is needed for Brutal Doom. You can even add a cross hair to your view to make it easier to aim. The features added to Brutal Doom is a great touch. I love running through the game with the shotgun and blasting them to bits. The shotgun animations are incredible and make you feel god like. This MOD does a fantastic job of keeping it "Doom" like. It does not change the story or gameplay. Just updates them. Fantastic MOD, I recommend it to all Doom fans.

There is only one small minor problem with this MOD. When you reload your guns it does not tell you how much ammo is in the clip, only how much ammo you have left over after reloading your ammo clip and can get annoying at some parts. But it is a very minor thing and you get used to it right away. One other feature is executing. When you boot an enemy and go up to them with your fists you have a chance to perform an execution. These are brutal!

The flame effects and the assault rifle.

The MOD also offers an all new soundtrack. It is the same music from the Original Doom games but re done with a metal sound to it. It is truly incredible. You can also insult the enemies. From flipping them off your telling them to "F*ck off"!
